Something mildly interesting, at least.

I was just sitting in front of my computer now when I heard a strange noise from outside. I looked out of the window to see a fire engine parked outside my house and people running from it and setting up a hose, and whatever else firemen do when they're dealing with a fire. Then they started walking up my driveway...

Alarmed, I went downstairs to find out what was going on. My house wasn't on fire, but one of my neighbours gardens was. Turns out some neighbours had been having a bonfire in their back garden. On this bonfire, they'd thrown a mattress and other random household things you shouldn't really burn. Someone (not sure if it was them) called the fire brigade, who promptly showed up and dealt with the fire. They went through my garden because it was the easiest way to get to the fire.

So, in summary, those neighbours are idiots, and hurrah for the Fire service!

Maelstrom, and GAH!!!

Firstly, I've booked for Maelstrom, and was wondering if anybody driving from York has space for me, or my kit with me on a train, as this would make getting there a hell of a lot easier.

Secondly, GAH!!! Useless HR people...

I won't be going to study HND Civil Engineering this year because the people in HR didn't tell me that in addition to all the forms I filled in I actually had to apply for the course. Both my manager and I had assumed that since we have the whole training scheme thing set up that they would handle all of that once I'd submitted my info, but it appears not. Cue finding out on Thursday last week, rushed applications and the expected 'we're sorry, but the course is full for this year' response. If I'm lucky, someone will drop out and I'll be able to replace them, but that's unlikely. There are no other alternatives in reasonable travelling distance, and to make matters worse the 1 year evening CAD course at York College I was looking at so I'd be able to progress my training somewhere this year has been pulled due to budget cuts.
True Tales of the Unexplained

A weird scene greeted me when I got back from work today. As I unlocked my door, I noticed that the door between the hall and the kitchen was ajar. "Odd", I thought, "I usually close that". So I entered, and walked into the kitchen. Someone, or something had spilled milk all over the floor. My first thought was to check the fridge because my milk must be leaking, but this proved not to be the case. I opened the fridge and the milk bottle was standing in its usual place (in the door of the fridge), lid on, no dripping holes, not sat in a pool of its former contents. I then searched round the house to see if anything was missing or had been moved, and if whoever or whatever was responsible was still around somewhere. Everything was as it should be. There were no cats hiding behind sofas or under beds, or people in cupboards.

The doors downstairs were locked (and I'd changed the locks after moving in) and all but one window was closed. The bathroom window was open at the top, and only allowed a couple of inches of space. The only conceivable way in was through the cat flap, which I'd left unlocked as I'm expecting a package too large for my letterbox but smaller than a cat (and I know my postie will try the cat flap, she's done it before). So a cat entered my house, managed to open the fridge, unscrew the milkbottle, pour milk on the floor, put the bottle back in the fridge, drank some milk and then left? Without leaving any tracks? Through the cat flap which could only be opened from the outside?

Weird.

I have some photos of the milk on the floor and several photos of the kitchen before I cleaned up. Not sure how to put them up here and don't have time right now to flick through help pages. They might appear later.

Do I get some cool prestige class out of this?

My boss said to me today that he'd like me to go and do a part time Civil Engineering HND. Basically 1 day a week for 3 years at Leeds Met, I get paid for going, the company pays the course fees and when I'm done then I'm a qualified Civil Engineer rather than the slightly qualified not-engineer I currently am. This is quite an awesome prospect. It seems a better plan than the guy from the ICE who said that I could pick up the engineering stuff gradually on the job over a few years, as our York office is small so the engineering types are usually too busy to teach me the theory stuff and technical knowledge that I'd need.

I've spoken to someone else at work who did the course a couple of years ago, my brother (who is at Leeds Met) and my Dad, and they all say go for it. It'd improve my understanding of the engineering side of things considerably, and would move me up a grade from technician to engineer, which everyone agrees I'd have no trouble doing - the ICE guy was impressed with the way I grasped some basic concepts which some senior engineering people sometimes struggle with.

So, come September I'm going to be starting my path to being a 'multi-class' archaeologist/engineer. :)
